What is actually in a family sofa
More than dirt, and it is worth setting out because it explains why cleaning does more than make it look better.
Body oil
The largest single contributor and the one nobody sees happening. Every person who sits down transfers oil into the fabric at the arms and the headrest. In a house of five that is five times the rate of a quiet household, and it is why the contrast after cleaning is so obvious.
Skin cells, and what feeds on them
Not a pleasant topic and a real one. Upholstery collects skin cells continuously, and dust mites live on them. For most people that is irrelevant. In a house with an allergy or asthma sufferer it is the single best reason to have the sofa done, and it is the case where the sanitizing add-on genuinely earns its money.
Pet hair, dander and coat oil
Three separate things that get lumped together. Hair is the visible one and comes out in volume. Dander is the part allergy sufferers actually react to. Coat oil is what produces the smell that appears on a warm day, and it is also what makes the fabric hold dust more readily.
Spills nobody mentioned
There is always at least one. It is fine. It is more useful to us if you point at it than if we find it.
What comes out and what does not
Being straight about this is more useful than optimism, so here it is plainly.
Comes out reliably: body oil, general soil, pet hair, most food and drink, mud, and the general dullness that makes a piece look tired.
Usually comes out: juice, coffee, most washable markers, pet accidents that are in the fabric rather than the foam.
Frequently does not: permanent marker, ballpoint, dye transfer from new denim, and anything that has bleached or removed color. These have stained the fiber rather than sitting on it, and no amount of cleaning puts color back.

The one that makes things worse
Worth a section of its own because it is the most common complication we deal with in family homes.
Somebody spills something. Somebody else grabs a household spot cleaner and scrubs at it. What frequently results is a ring more visible than the original mark, either because the cleaning agent is still in the fiber attracting soil, or because water went onto a fabric that could not take it.
Tell us it happened and tell us what was used. Nobody is being judged, it is the most normal thing in the world, and it genuinely changes what we reach for. Trying to lift something without knowing what is already in the fabric is how a small problem becomes a bigger one.
Pet urine, honestly
The most common question and the one with the most disappointing honest answer, so here it is.
If the urine is in the fabric, treatment works well. The residue producing the smell gets addressed rather than covered, and the piece comes back genuinely clean.
If it has soaked into the cushion foam, the source is inside the cushion. Treating the cover addresses the part you can reach and leaves the part producing the smell untouched. It will improve and it will not resolve, and within a few weeks you will be back where you started.
In that situation the real answer is replacing the insert, which is a furniture question rather than a cleaning one. We will tell you that rather than sell you a treatment that cannot work.
How often with kids and animals
Closer to every 12 months than the 18 to 24 a quieter household can run to.
It is not that family furniture gets dirtier in kind, it gets dirtier faster. Same processes, more people, more contact hours, more of everything. A sofa that would look fine at two years in a couple's home is well past due at that point in a house with three kids and a labrador.
The other argument for the shorter interval is that soil left in fabric is abrasive. Dry soil in the weave cuts fibers every time somebody sits down, which is a slow wear process you cannot see happening and cannot reverse. Cleaning on schedule is genuinely cheaper than replacing furniture early.
Questions
Will you get the pet hair out?
Yes, and generally in quantities that surprise people who thought they had already vacuumed it. Vacuuming lifts what sits on the surface. A great deal more is worked down into the weave, and extraction is what pulls that.
Can you get rid of the pet smell?
Depends where it is. Odour in the fabric responds well. Odour from urine that has soaked through into the cushion foam is a different problem, because the source is inside the cushion rather than on it, and treating the outside will not solve it. We will tell you which you have.
What is pet urine treatment?
A treatment applied to the affected area that addresses the residue producing the smell, rather than covering it. It works where the urine is in the fabric. Where it has reached the foam insert, the honest answer is that the insert is the problem.
Is the sanitizing add-on the same thing?
No. Pet urine treatment targets a specific contamination in a specific spot. Sanitizing addresses what is living in the fabric across the whole piece, which is a broader question and the one that matters on furniture that has never been professionally cleaned.
Is it safe around kids and pets?
The products are used as directed and the piece is dry within a few hours. If anybody in the house has particular sensitivities, say so when you ring and we will work around it.
My kid drew on the sofa. Can you fix it?
Depends entirely on what with. Washable marker, usually. Permanent marker, ballpoint and anything dye-based, frequently not, because they have stained the fiber rather than sitting on it. We will tell you honestly before starting rather than charge you to try.
